The City of Pendleton, one of Oregon's premier frontier towns, has played a major role in Oregon development since it was incorporated in 1880. At the foot of the Blue Mountains in northeastern Oregon, it is surrounded by vast fields of grain, cattle and sheep ranches and fabulous vistas. The Old Oregon Trail runs right through town on what is now known as Court Street. Pendleton Woolen Mills, celebrating its 100th birthday in 2009, and the Pendleton Round-Up, which turns 100 in 2010, have made the name “Pendleton” known around the globe.

Both are as vital today as when they originated. World famous Hamley & Co. purveyors of western gear and saddle makers, celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2005. Western living is optimized in this ranching community and visitors are welcomed with a warm smile and handshake.

The nearby Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indians also make major contributions to the development of the area. The Wildhorse Resort & Casino, Tamastslikt Cultural Institute and Cayuse Technologies, a tech consulting business, all located on the Reservation make the CTUIR second only to the state in providing jobs for the community.

Determined to stay current with the 21st Century, Pendleton is not resting on its laurels. Capitalizing on its history the City put in place an urban renewal program and is restoring its downtown Main Street to resemble the 'Wild and Woolly' western town it was in the late 1800s and early 20th century.

Visitors here will find a wide array of activities – outdoor sports, for example hunting, fishing, skiing to camping. Gourmet restaurants are available that will satisfy the most demanding gourmand. The Pendleton Underground, Heritage Station (The Umatilla Historical Society), Tamastslikt Cultural Institute and the Pendleton Arts Center contribute to explain the eclectic culture that exists here, past and present. Check the Pendleton web site for upcoming events.

Gearing up for the 2010 Centennial Celebration of the Pendleton Round-Up the community is alive with excitement and activity. We suggest you adopt the Round-Up's time-tested slogan, visit Pendleton, and LET 'ER BUCK!
