View from Main Street

By Barbara Sidway, Proprietor, Geiser Grand Hotel

/Flowering plum trees line the stately Main Street of Historic Baker City; their blooms proclaim that warm weather is quickly approaching.   There’s no better time to get out and explore the treasures here.

There are remarkable museums here, to be sure. The National Historic Interpretive Center (owned +operated by the Federal Government) is commemorates the greatest land migration in the history of the continent with living history programs, displays and rotating exhibits. The Baker Heritage Museum has a world class rock collection and a variety of wonders, with new exhibits to keep things interesting. The Eastern Oregon Museum showcases the original birdcage elevator from the Geiser Grand Hotel; yes, it was the first elevator in the Pacific Northwest! The Leo Adler House Museum is lovely and charming, and right on Main Street.

But the biggest and best museum of all is open 24 hours/day, every day all year; no admission  fee, disabled access assured, free parking and refreshments available for purchase; even horse drawn carriages/sleigh rides  are available.  Yes, this may be Oregon’s best kept secret, and I’m sharing it with you now. It’s the Baker City Historic District! More than one hundred buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places make up this several block downtown area. Easy to explore; many plaques explain the significance; pick up a walking tour guide from the Geiser Grand, which is also open 24 hrs/day, year ‘round. Friendly shopkeepers love to share the story of our interesting history.   It’s said that Historic Baker City is the most intact nineteenth century streetscape in the West dating back to the 1880’s and Baker City’s rollicking gold rush days.

/Just imagine  streets filled with gold prospectors, hardy pioneers, immigrants anxious to start a new life, ladies of the night trying to make ends meet, and all the characters looking to make a living through the gold riches! Three guided tour options tell this story. Every Saturday afternoon at 3:30 costumed docent “Step Back in Time” tours begin at the Geiser Grand Hotel, crown jewel of Baker City. Cost is just $2 per person, reservations suggested; call 888-434-7374.  GeiserGrand Haunted Historic Baker City tours explores the possibilities that many spirits remained behind. Under the cover of night explore the many nineteenth century saloons, businesses, churches and stately homes.  $10 Adults, $5 age 6-17, kids under 6 free. Candlelit 60-75 minute, walking tour. Private tours (Step Back in Time and Haunted Historic) may be arranged. Horse drawn carriage ride/tours of the district area available by appointment; ranging from a romantic cozy tour for a couple or a rollicking hay wagon tour for 100, call 541 523 1889.

The Geiser Grand Hotel is in the center of it all, the perfect base camp for exploring the district. We hope that you’ll choose to stay overnight; rates from $99.
