Vineyard and Valley Scenic Tour Route
The untold stories of Washington County, Oregon’s rich agricultural history
Oregon’s newest driving route, the Vineyard & Valley Scenic Tour Route, is a 50-mile drive through the lush Tualatin Valley, which runs between the city of Sherwood to the southern part of the valley and the Swiss-settled Helvetia at the northern end.
The rural driving route showcases much of Washington County’s agricultural bounty, including 17 of the county’s 21 wineries, which are tucked into the countryside west of Portland, and several farms (some with stands offering seasonal fresh produce and/or u-pick), pioneer and historic sites, wildlife refuges and scenic viewpoints of the Cascade Mountains, including the iconic, snow-capped Mt. Hood.
The Vineyard & Valley Scenic Tour Route takes visitors through small, rural communities and to some of the most majestic scenic viewpoints in the county. (Note: Because portions include narrow county roads, low bridge overpasses and winding roads, the route is not recommended for tour buses or bicyclists.)
Best to be enjoyed during a full day of discoveries along the way – from the wineries to such attractions as the scenic Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge – the route offers hospitality at historic country taverns and old-time general stores and easy access to Sherwood, Forest Grove, Gaston and other towns for lodging and dining.
The newly designated 50-mile route is part of the “Discover Oregon Scenic Byways” program.
Discover gourmet treats along the way, such as Longbottom Coffee & Tea, Inc. (www.longbottomcoffee.com) where owner Michael Baccellieri and his crew have been roasting coffee beans daily for the last 25 years. Treat yourself to a cup of specialty coffee brewed right on site, perhaps over breakfast or lunch. A perfect stop to interact with the locals who make Longbottom’s an everyday event.
