San Diego, Los Angeles, Anaheim, Oakland and San Francisco. Play ball! April 6th. is opening day for major league baseball in California. The San Diego Padres play the Los Angeles Dodgers at PETCO Park. The Los Angeles Angels play the Oakland Athletics at Angel Stadium. San Diego. The slowdown in the economy has resulted in unprecedented rates for the city. Through April 30th., visitors can book money-saving hotel deals of up to 40% off already discounted rates. A variety of packages combining tickets to popular family attractions like the San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld San Diego, LEGOLAND and Balboa Park are also available. Westwood/Los Angeles. "Sweet Tax Relief" is being offered through April by Kimpton's Hotel Palomar in Westwood. Their package includes deluxe accommodations, candy bars, late check-out and they pay the room tax (14%). Pacheco State Park. Every Saturday and Sunday in April there are two hikes offered in this 6,800 acre state park. Join park naturalist Jennifer Morgan from 10 am - noon to view wildflowers and discuss the Native American and pioneer uses of plants and the rich history of Pacheco Pass. The hike is about 2 miles long and is classed as moderate. From noon to 1 pm, Ranger Denis Poole will take visitors on a one mile round trip walk to see the remaining structure of the first adobe house built in Merced County, as well as an original shack from the 1800's and the Pacheco family horse ranch. Davis. April 18th. is Open House at UC Davis. First begun in 1909, the day is packed with150 events. The highlights include a "smack down" between college bands, seven music and dance stages, an assortment of academic exhibits, Weiner Dog Races and a parade. Also in April, the Davis Certified Farmers Market is open every Wednesday and Saturday. It features stalls filled with fruits, vegetables, nuts, organic produce, flowers, honey, wine, cheese, crafts, gift baskets and much more. /San Simeon. In 1919, William Randolph Hearst said to famed San Francisco architect Julia Morgan "We are tired of camping out in the open at the ranch in San Simeon and I would like to build a little something." By 1947, Hearst and Morgan had created an estate of 165 rooms with 127 acres of gardens, terraces, pools and walkways. The newly designed Hearst Castle website offers a virtual tour of the estate's gardens, suites, swimming pools and fine art.
