Five time Spur Award Winnibg author Loren Estleman has added another notch to his creative string of over 60 novels, translated into 23 different languages. THE BRANCH AND THE SCAFFOLD, a novel published byTom Doherty Associates, LLC chronicles the story of the famed ‘Hangin’ Judge Parker, Fort Smith, Arkansas’ answer to law and order in the late 1800s. As Estleman puts it, “Only God and the president had the power to challenge Parker.

This is historical fiction at its best. Fort Smith was on the edge of the Frontier, abutting the Oklahoma Territory where so many of the desperados tried to hide. US Marshals brought them back to face Parker and meet their fate by either being hanged or housed in the jail known as Hell on the Border. The Branch and the Scaffold paints a vivid history of life as it was during this period.
