May is National Historic Preservation Month!

Enjoy it in Washington State’s San Juan Islands!

/Choose from many local history presentations, guided walking tours of Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor, "If This House Could Talk" home tours and other activities planned in the San Juan Islands during the month of May. There's a local history museum on each of the three Islands -- Lopez, Orcas and San Juan, each one unique. Learn more about the month's events and the museums at Historic Friday Harbor’s website, www.historicfridayharbor.org.

The preservation of prairie habitat and native wildflowers is a focus of the National Park Service, which has a colorful celebration of spring planned for Bloom Week, held May 3 - 8. Visit San Juan Island National Historical Park's American Camp for family activities, the highlight of which will be the Wildflower Festival on Saturday, May 7, on the parade grounds. To see details on these events, visit the San Juan Island National Historical Park website at www.nps.gov/sajh.

In the village of Eastsound on Orcas Island, the Orcas Island Historical Museum's current exhibit "Destination Orcas," an early history of its resorts, continues through May 28. While on Orcas Island, plan for time to visit the 1909 Moran Mansion at Rosario for a glimpse of elegant Arts & Crafts furnishings and decorative architectural features. Visit the Orcas Island Historical Museum’s site at www.orcasmuseum.org.

First Annual

Lopez Lamb & Wool Festival

Let's just say it will be sheer delight to be on Lopez Island Saturday, May 14.

Saddleback Sheep Ranch and Island Fibers have planned a Lopez Island springtime celebration of sheep, lamb and fiber. Come to the Village to see sheep-shearing and sheepdog demonstrations plus spinning, weaving, felting, knitting and dyeing.

Enjoy fleece and wool exhibits, product sales and hands-on activities for all at the Lopez Center for Community and the Arts. Proceeds from sales and a sumptuous island-style dinner will benefit the Lopez Farm-to-School Program. For more information, visit Island Fibers at www.islandfibers.com.
